Book accompanying the German Volcano Route
In the opinions of geologists, the Eifel is the most active region in Germany. Its moving history has been open to tourists since September 2006: The German Volcano Route connects 39 geological tourist attractions along a 280 kilometre stretch. The geologist Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Meyer and the travel journalist Wolfgang Blum accompany visitors along this route. The authors do not restrict themselves to presenting bygone eras, but also span the gap with the present. Mountain domes which are worn away, stone bridges now abandoned and underground mines all show just how inhabitants of the region have continuously made use of the destructive forces of the volcanoes to this day. Powerful crater lakes, forceful cracks in the landscape and sputtering volcanic sources – the list of sites of interest is long. It includes historical towns and places: Brohltal, Gerolstein and its Dolomites, Mendig and the Museumslay, Hillesheim, home of the Eifel thrillers, as well as Manderscheid and Mayen with their castles. Particularly impressive: The interactive museum in which one is not simply astonished by volcanic activity, but is also able to experience it first hand. The book also contains two overview maps, 20 geological sketches, 235 colour photos and hundreds of tourist tips. Let the scintillating journey into the fiery past of Vulkanland begin. Available at all tourist information centres and bookshops at a price of 12.80 Euros.
