VOLCANIC STONES TELL THEIR STORY

VOLCANOES OF THE EASTERN EIFEL

10.00 a.m. Arrival at the Rauschermühle information center in Plaidt/Saffig 25-minute film: “Volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel - a hot story”

10.30 a.m. Tour of the information center. The Rauschermühle information center is the central point of contact in the volcano park in the district of Mayen-Koblenz and is a stop on the German Volcano Route. Visitors can find out about all the projects here. Films, computer animations, illuminated pictures, large-format photographs as well as antique and medieval original finds combine to create a unique presentation of Eifel volcanism.

The 7,000-year history of quarrying and the life of the people from and with the volcanic stones is vividly presented in the 30-minute documentary film “Stone Times”. The film fits in perfectly with the museum's archaeological exhibition and also creates a link to the 20 natural and landscape monuments in the volcano park.

It is possible to visit the house with the audio guide. If you would like a group tour, this must be booked separately in advance. Tour of the adjacent Rauscherpark The Rauscherpark is located directly behind the information center. Here, the Nette has been rushing through the lava flow of the Wannen volcano group for over 200,000 years. Over the millennia, the river has washed away basalt blocks, over which the Nette flows in small cascades. Visible traces in the rock bear witness to Roman mining activity.

- Lunch break

2.00 p.m. Tour of the Meurin Roman mine near Kretz The 2,000-year-old mine with its mining chambers, shafts and stairs is protected by a modern hall construction. The underground mining of the Romans is vividly explained using large illuminated pictures and interactive computer animations. The Roman mine can be visited with an audio guide. If you would like a group tour, this must be booked separately in advance.

3.00 p.m. Drive to the Ettringer Lay volcano park project in Ettringen, located directly on the German Volcano Route with its numerous technical remains from the early 20th century, the Ettringer Lay is a unique monument to quarry history.

If you look from the edge of the pit at the quarry parcel with the huge basalt wall, you can imagine how deep the old valley must have been before the eruption and the large quantities of hot lava that flowed from the edge of the Ettringer Bellerberg. Along the circular route, life-size steel figures depict scenes from the everyday life of the old quarrymen.
