The Eppelsberg near Nickenich is a typical cinder cone volcano of the Eastern Eifel, which was active around 230,000 years ago. Modern mining has created a unique window that allows deep insights into the interior of the volcano and reveals the typical structure of a cinder cone with its layers on the more than 60 m high wall.
Please note that the original viewing platform opposite the excavation wall is currently not accessible due to the ongoing excavation. Furthermore, there are currently no information boards explaining the history of this volcano. The best and currently only insight into the history of the formation of the Eppelsberg can be gained on a hike on the “Pellenzer Seepfad” dream trail, a wonderful hiking trail that leads around the Laacher See lake.
You need to plan just under 6 hours to complete the entire dream trail. However, if you walk in a clockwise direction, you will already pass the Eppelsberg quarry after approx. 1 km. Address/Approach The shortest route to the Eppelsberg starts at the Roman tomb in 56645 Nickenich (parking lot at the Tumulus, Laacher Straße). This is also the start of the “Pellenzer Seepfad” dream trail
