6. LAVA-DOME: WELCOME TO THE LAVA-DOME

A unique world of experience around the volcanism of the Eastern Eifel awaits you in the Lava Dome and the lava cellars in Mendig. Adults and especially children can experience volcanism with all their senses in the Eifel town of Mendig. In the exhibition “In the Land of Volcanoes”, a huge multimedia volcanic eruption demonstrates the enormous forces of nature and makes the earth tremble. You will probably never get closer to an “active” volcano than in Mendig.

In the volcano workshop, visitors can explore the basics of volcanism at large experiment tables and playful exhibits and try out theoretical facts on their own bodies. The talking stones in the “Time of Volcanoes” exhibition area tell the stories of famous volcanoes and devastating eruptions from all over the world. And the Lava Dome takes a look into the future together with you. What would happen if the Laacher See volcano erupted again? Find out during a realistic television broadcast in the interactive circular cinema.

A unique landscape awaits you in the lava cellars. 30 meters below the town of Mendig is a labyrinth of tunnels and shafts, spread over an area of almost 3 square kilometers. This underground labyrinth was created when the people of Mendig mined the precious black basalt in the late Middle Ages. Climb 150 steps or take the elevator to reach the heart of this cooled lava flow. A curious world of black basalt columns, old mining shafts and all kinds of stories about mining in Mendig and the local beer brewing tradition awaits you in this unique landscape in the Eifel. Plan about 1 to 1.5 hours for your visit to the Lava Dome. The subsequent guided tour of the lava cellars takes about 70 minutes.
