26. WEINFELDER MAAR UND SCHALKENMEHRENER MAAR

Weinfelder Maar: The former parish church of Weinfeld is the landscape-defining church of the village of the same name, which perished in the plague in the 16th century. The low west tower and the square cross-ribbed vaulted choir from the 14th century are Gothic, while the two-axis flat-roofed nave dates from 1723. Slag and Devonian slate can be seen on the western edge of the maar cone.

Schalkenmehrener Maar: The Schalkenmehrener Maar was originally a double maar and was named after the village of Schalkenmehren on the southern shore. The silted-up eastern part of the maar has fen vegetation.

THE SMALL CHAPEL ON THE NORTHERN SHORE OF THE WEINFELD MAAR WAS ONCE THE PARISH CHURCH OF THE VILLAGE OF WEINFELD, WHICH WAS RAVAGED BY THE PLAGUE IN THE 16TH CENTURY. IF YOU RING THE BELLS INSIDE BY PULLING THE ROPES, YOU CAN MAKE A WISH. TO THIS DAY, THE ASSOCIATED CEMETERY IS MAINTAINED AND USED BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY OF SCHALKENMEHREN. THE SECOND NAME, TOTENMAAR, IS ALSO DERIVED FROM THIS.
